ONA, WV-The Ona Speedway was the place to be on Saturday, April 27th for the Mays Transfer & Contracting/Jeffers Excavation & Transportation Mountaineer 100. Cars from six different states invaded West Virginia’s only paved oval for what was an incredible night of racing.
The night started with the 20 lap Three Sixteen Motorsports INEX Legends Car Semi-Pro feature. Dean Brotherton stormed to the lead while the racing was intense behind him as fast qualifier Jay Dunlap quickly moved into the second position. On lap four going down the backstretch, Dunlap looked to the inside of Brotherton into turn three as they battled for the lead! The two went side by side for the lead through the corner and coming off of turn four down the frontstretch the two made contact with Brotherton slamming hard into the outside guardrail. Brotherton would thankfully walk away uninjured. With Brotherton charged with the caution, Dunlap would maintain his position in the lead. When the race resumed, Dunlap would stretch away and come to the checkered flag to claim his first win of the season! Nate Dunlap finished second in his first career race with Kenny McComas third, Frank Lusher fourth, and Elijah Johnson fifth.
Jake Keaton took the lead to start the nights 35 lap All Seasons Powersports Late Model feature. With Keaton up front, the battle for the second position was ferocious between youngsters Carson Lucas and Tyler Johnson. The two battled hard during the entire first part of the race with Jacob Bell right behind them. The trio battled it out until the races first Chris Miller for WV Governor caution would fall on lap 17 for a Scott Stern spin. On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart, Johnson would jump to the outside in the choose cone and battle side by side with Keaton for the lead in turn one. Keaton would hold the lead off of turn two while Johnson and Lucas battled side by side for second. Johnson would be able to jump back down low and maintain the second position. Keaton would lead the remaining laps to take his second feature win in a row with Tyler Johnson second, Carson Lucas third, Jacob Bell fourth, and Mike Burcham fifth.
The next race up was the Midwest Modifieds Tour portion of the Mountaineer 100 that offered a strong $2,000 to win payout. Hamilton, Indiana’s Brian Nester jumped to the lead while the racing through the field was some of the best, most intense Modified racing we have seen at Ona in quite some time. Three time Mountaineer winner Matt Dimit charged from his fourth place starting position to set his sights on Nester. Dimit would close into a few car lengths behind Nester until the races first caution flag flew on lap 20 as Sam Bigham slowed in turn four. This put Nester and Dimit side by side for the restart. On the restart, Nester would hold the lead while Dimit tucked in line right behind Nester. As the laps wore on, Nester kept pulling away as he would lead the remaining laps to come across the checkered flag and claim his third career Mountaineer win! Dimit finished second with Petoskey, Michigan’s Buddy Gray charging from 8th to finish third, Andy Booten charging from 9th to finish fourth, and Danny Jackson Jr. fifth.
The Haunted Majestic Street Stocks would then battle 50 laps for $1,300 to win courtesy of Jeffers Excavation & Transportation throwing in an extra $500 on the winners purse. Chris Jividen would take the lead at the start with Marty Powers in the second position. Jividen and Powers would battle nose-to-tail for the lead for the entire first 15 lap segment of the race. On lap 14, Powers would battle side by side with Jividen for the lead! As the two raced to the lap 15 segment caution, Powers would clear Jividen off of turn four to the yellow flag to win the first segment. Once Powers took the lead, he would never look back as he led the remaining laps to claim his second consecutive Mountaineer win! The entire race would see some of the best racing we’ve ever seen at Ona between Kenny Chapman, Tommy Rowe, Mike Christy, Chris Jividen, and Jason Skeens. There were so many great battles between them during the race, it is literally too much to write about. Chapman would finish second with Rowe third, Skeens fourth, and Christy fifth.
Jason Garrett and Jake Keaton put on a thrilling battle for the lead in the first half of the Three Sixteen Motorsports INEX Legends Car Pro feature. The two were nose-to-tail the entire 10 laps with Keaton ducking under Garrett coming off of turn four to the competition caution on lap 10 with Garrett holding on to the lead. On the restart, Garrett would maintain the lead with Keaton in second. Meanwhile, Dale Garrett and Tyler Martin would have an intense, side by side battle for third with Martin making the pass to move into the position. The longer the race wore on, the more Garrett would pull away as he came to the checkered flag to claim his second win this season and fourth in a row dating back to last year! Keaton finished second with Martin third, Dale Garrett fourth, and Adam Jeffrey fifth.
Nick Fowler and Jay Workman could never get away from each other during the nights 30 lap Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR feature. The two drivers battled nose to tail for literally the entire race. With the laps winding down in the race, Workman was desperately trying to find a way to get around Fowler. With two laps to go, Workman would finally get the run he was looking for off of turn two as he shot to the inside of Fowler down the backstretch! Fowler would go to block as the two nearly went into the backstretch grass! Fowler would maintain the lead through turns three and four to the white flag. Workman was still chasing Fowler down only a car length behind. Into turn three, everyone anticipated the bump and run by Workman but he couldn’t get there. Then off of turn four, almost to the checkered flag Fowlers car erupts into smoke as the engine blows with Workman now looking to the inside of Fowler! Fowler would hang on to win his first race since 2022 in a thrilling photo finish! Workman finished second with Keith Watson third, Jake Burgroff fourth, and Chris Deskins fifth.
The much anticipated first race in Ona Speedway history for the Brody Nash Century 21 Crown Vics ended the night and was it ever a thrilling race. In his first ever race, Shane McClane would lead the first lap while Ona veteran Jamie Womack took the lead on lap two and another Ona veteran JR Adkins moved into second. Womack and Adkins battled nose to tail the entire first half of the race, making slight contact at times until the competition caution flew on lap 10. On the restart, Womack and Adkins battled side by side for the lead in a thrilling battle that went lap after lap! In what looked like a NASCAR drafting race where the cars couldn’t separate, the two remained side by side. With two laps to go, they were still side by side for the lead! As they came to the white flag, Womack got loose off of turn four allowing Adkins to finally clear Womack as Adkins would lead the final lap to come across the checkered flag and win the first Crown Vic race in Ona Speedway history! Womack finished second with McClane third.
