ONA, WV-Ona Speedway officials fought through three rain delays and track drying processes to complete four of the five features on Night #2 of the Season Championships.  The fourth rain delay would end up ending the night prior to the Geer Brother’s Body Shop INEX Legends Car Semi-Pro feature, which will setup a double feature race for that class on Yes Chevrolet/Yes Ford Mountaineer 100 Friday.

After a two hour weather delay, the Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR feature hit the track first for their 30 lap feature.  Nick Fowler stormed to the lead at the start with Joe Workman right behind him in second and Chris Deskins in third.  To have a shot at the championship, Fowler had to win the race and hope Chris Deskins finished 10th or worse.  The races first caution fell on lap 6 for a Dustin Higginbotham spin.  On the restart, Fowler continued with the lead while Deskins moved into the second position, right behind Workman.  For much of the race Fowler, Deskins, Workman, and Jay Workman battled nose to tail in a four car race for the lead.  As the laps wore on, Fowler stretched out his lead on Deskins by over a second.  Fowler appeared poised for victory until a caution flew with four laps to go for Keith Watson who blew a motor.  On the restart, Fowler held off Deskins who stayed right on his bumper to take the feature win!  Deskins finished second and clinched the 2022 track championship.  Joe Workman finished third with Tim Cassidy fourth and Reuben Fetty fifth.

13 year old Carson Lucas took the lead to start the night’s 30 lap CRS Super Truck feature.  All eyes were on sixth place starter Brandon Huff who quickly moved into the second position and set his sights on Lucas.  Huff would catch Lucas and use the highside to battle side by side for the lead!  Huff would make the pass for the lead on lap 9.  As the laps wore on, Huff started to pull away from Lucas by over a second.  However, as the race got into the final 10 laps, Lucas started inching away at Huff’s lead.  With the crowd all on their feet, Lucas caught Huff with four laps to go and was right on his bumper!  Coming to three laps to go through turns 3 and 4, Huff slipped high, allowing Lucas to get a run underneath of him and battle side by side for the lead!  The two battled side by side for the lead for the entire lap with Lucas clearing Huff off of turn four to regain the lead with two laps to go.  Lucas would lead the remaining two laps to come across the checkered flag and take his second career CRS Super Truck win in front of his hometown fans!  Huff finished second with Jeremy Hill third, Lindsey Lemmerman fourth, and Chad Squires fifth.  Despite being involved in an early race accident, Brad Copen clinched the 2022 CRS Super Truck championship.

Tyler Brown took the lead to start the night’s Greg Chandler Frame & Body Sport Mod feature with Rick Watson tucked behind him in second.  As the laps wore on, Brown pulled Watson to a 3-4 car length lead.  Coming to complete lap 12, while safely in the lead, Brown’s car snapped loose of turn four as he spun to bring out a caution.  The culprit was a oil leak in Brown’s car causing oil to get on the tires and him to spin.  Brown kept his car off the guardrail but was done for the race.  This left Rick Watson and J. R. Adkins the front row for the restart.  On the restart, Adkins used the highside to battle side by side and take the lead from Watson!

Watson stayed tucked right on the back bumper of Adkins and tried everyway to get around him.  On the final lap, the two were still nose to tail for the lead.  Going into turn 3, Watson gave Adkins a bump, upsetting Adkins car.  Adkins went into the grass, fighting the car and came back up on the track as the two were side by side for the lead off of turn 4 with both drivers sideways trying to save their car!  As they came to the checkers Watson corrected his car first and came to the checkers to take the win on a last lap pass as Adkins spun and came across the checkered flag backwards to finish second!  Brad Cooper finished third with Tyler Brown fourth and Marty Powers fifth.

Brett Carey took the lead to start the night’s 25 lap Bumper Pounding Street Stock feature with Chris Jividen quickly moving into the second position.  To have a shot at the championship, Carey had to win the race and hope Jividen finished sixth or worse while all Jividen had to do was finish fourth or better to clinch the track championship.  Carey and Jividen battled nose to tail for the lead for the entire race with Carey coming to the checkered flag to take the feature win!  Jividen stayed tucked in behind Carey and finished second to clinch his first career track championship!  Chris Wheeler finished third with Tommy Rowe fourth and Mike Cooper fifth in his first race at Ona in 10 years.

The Ona Speedway will be back in action for the biggest race of the season on September 23rd-24th with the Yes Chevrolet/Yes Ford Mountaineer 100!  Friday’s program will feature afternoon practice for Saturday’s cars and a complete racing program that evening of the Greg Chandler Frame & Body Sport Mods, Southern Ohio Speed INEX Legends Car Pro, double features for the Geer Brother’s Body Shop INEX Legends Car Semi-Pro, and the Snap Lawn & Handyman Crazy Compacts.  Saturday will feature the 100 lap Mountaineer 100 for the Modifieds, Mountaineer 50 for the Late Models, a 40 lap show for the Bumper Pounding Street Stocks, a 40 lap show for the Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR’s, and the first ever appearance by the Crown Vics.  A press release will be out in the coming days with the complete information for this mega event that will payout over $30,000 in purse money.
