ONA, WV-After a long spring and summer of racing, it all came down to the West Virginia Lottery Season Championships on Saturday, September 21st. While Saturday was not the end of the season (the track still has two big races on October 19th and 26th), it was the final points race of the season meaning the track champions in each division would be crowned.
The night started with drama right off the bat in the All Season’s Powersports Late Model division as second place points runner Mike Burcham and Jim Newman made contact down the backstretch resulting in a heavy crash that immediately brought out the red flag. Both cars would be unable to continue but thankfully both drivers were ok. On the second attempted start, Jake Keaton continued with the lead with Gregg Carby in second and Jacob Bell in third until the competition caution flew on lap 15. On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart, Keaton continued with the lead while Bell using the high side moved into second. However, Bell’s run in second did not last long as going into turn three something broke in his machine causing it to top to bring out a Dutch Miller Automotive caution. When the race resumed, Keaton led the remaining laps to come across the checkered flag and claim the feature win and the track championship! Carby finished in second.
Jeremy Cooper took the lead to start the LG Pressure Washing Modified feature with Jamie Womack quickly moving into the second position. Womack and Wes Smith would engage in an excellent battle for second the first half of the race while eighth place starter Steve Hass quickly moved his way through the field and into the top five. The Dutch Miller Automotive competition caution would fly on lap 15 with Cooper three car lengths ahead of Womack. On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart, Smith would go high on the choose and start alongside of Cooper. Cooper would continue with the lead while Smith would use the high side to move into second. As the laps wore on, Cooper began to inch away from the field as he would lead the remaining laps to claim the feature win and clinch the track championship! Smith finished second with Steve Hass making a last lap pass on Womack to finish third. Womack finished fourth with Benny Hickle fifth.
Adam Jeffrey and Jason Garrett battled side by side for the lead to start the nights 20 lap Three Sixteen Motorsports INEX Legends Car feature. Garrett would use the high side to pass Jeffrey and take the lead. Once in the lead, Garrett would pull away while Jeffrey and Dale Garrett had an intense battle for the second position. After several laps of battling, Garrett would make the pass on Jeffrey to move into the second position on lap five. The racing through the field stayed intense in the race as Randall Cline and Jay Dunlap had a great battle for the second position while Elijah Johnson and Teddy Berry had a great battle for sixth. Jason Garrett would lead all of the laps to come across the checkered flag and take the feature win and clinch the track championship! Dale Garrett finished second with Jeffrey third, Cline fourth, and Dunlap fifth. Dunlap would be scored the Semi-Pro winner.
Following a last lap pass to win the heat race, JR Adkins would start on pole and take the lead at the start of the nights 20 lap Brody Nash Century 21 Crown Vic feature with Jamie Womack right behind him. Womack would give Adkins a few bumps and battle him for the lead at times in the race but as the laps wore on Adkins would start to pull away. Adkins would come across the checkered flag to take the feature win and clinch the track championship! Womack would outduel Kenny McComas in a race for second that came down to the end with Womack finishing second and McComas third. Karsyn Maxey finished fourth.
Jay Workman came into the nights Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR feature holding his own destiny. With the fast time bonus point, Workman was in a position that if he were to win the race, he would be the track champion. Workman started the nights 30 lap feature with the lead with Chris Deskins right on his bumper. Workman and Deskins had an intense battle for the lead for a couple of laps with the two making contact on lap two! The contact sent Workman into a half spin but he saved the car, maintained the lead and the race stayed green. Workman would then start to pull away by a few car lengths up front as Deskins and Fowler engaged in an intense battle now for the second position. Fowler knew he had to be able to keep Workman from winning to win the championship as he battled hard to get up to the second position heading into the Dutch Miller Automotive competition caution on lap 15.
On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart following the competition caution, chaos would ensue as David Adkins would go spinning into turn one and collect Preston Hysell and Reuben Fetty. All three cars would be done for the race. On the second attempted restart, Workman and Fowler would restart side by side! The two would battle hard for the lead for the next few laps but as the laps wore on Workman would start to pull away. Workman would lead the remaining laps and come to the checkered flag to win and do the unthinkable and overcome starting the season with 0 points after the first race and win the track championship! Fowler finished second with Deskins third, Keith Watson fourth, and Tim Cassidy fifth.
The final race of the night would be the Haunted Majestic Street Stock feature that would see Kenny Chapman clinch the track championship by finishing fourth or better. Chapman would start the race from the pole and take the early race lead with Jason Skeens in second and second place points runner Tommy Rowe in third. Rowe knew that he would have to put pressure on Chapman to have any shot of winning the track championship. Skeens and Rowe battled for second for several laps during the first half of the race with Rowe making the pass. Heading into the Dutch Miller Automotive competition caution, Rowe and Skeens would make contact with Skeens spinning around and bringing out the caution.
On the Dutch Miller Automotive restart, it was Chapman and Rowe now on the front row. The two battled side by side for the lead into turn one with Chapman holding the lead as the field came off of turn two. Chapman would continue with the lead for the remainder of the race and come across the checkered flag to take the feature win and the track championship! Rowe finished second with Skeens third, Melinda Spurlock fourth, and Amanda Gollihue fifth.
