ONA, WV-Mother nature has not been kind to Ona Speedway this season and that trend unfortunately continued this weekend.  With saturated grounds from torrential rains the past couple days and a forecast calling for an 80% chance of rain on raceday, the speedway was left with no other choice than to cancel Saturday’s RECO Products Kid’s Night.  This is unfortunately the second race in a row that has been canceled.

“We really wanted to get this race in but an evaluation of the grounds this evening showed that was just not going to happen”, stated track promoter T. J. Layne.  “If tomorrow’s forecast would of been nice all day we would of had a chance to of made it happen, but with a continuation of the front we’ve been in having such a high chance for torrential rain, high humidity all day, and little sunshine it left us with no other choice.”

The next race at Ona Speedway will now be on Saturday, August 1st for the Putnam County Bank Throwback Classic.  The speedway looked at racing next Saturday, July 18th as a non-points race since that date wasn’t on the schedule but ultimately decided against that due to half the drivers polled in the drivers chat saying they would not be able to make it.  The following Saturday, July 25th is the Cabell County Fair, a date the speedway has always tried to stay off of.

“These rainouts the past two races have came at the worst time of the year to make them up”, stated Layne.  “So many people take their summer vacations in July plus you have county fairs in our county and two surrounding counties, along with other big summertime events.  We hate that the rainouts have created a gap in our schedule, but on the bright side we have a lot of really great racing left in August, September and October that will all be can’t miss events for the fans.”
