ONA, WV-A big crowd packed the Ona Speedway on Saturday, June 25th for Night #2 of the 3rd Annual JR’s Frame & Body Firecracker Extravaganza and the Yes Chevrolet/Yes Ford Fireworks Show presented by Shaffer’s Drive-In and Bill & Lynn Bauer.  Cars from three different states put on a thrilling show for the fans in attendance.

The night started with the 20 lap McCam Builders Classic Car feature.  Polesitter Cam McKinney jumped to the early race lead while fifth place starter Kenny McCallister quickly moved into the second position within three laps and set his sights on McKinney.  By the races halfway mark, McCallister caught McKinney and put the pressure on him in the battle for the lead.  McCallister stayed right on McKinney’s bumper desparetely trying to find a a way around, looking both high and low.  On the final lap, the two were still bumper-to-bumper as going into turn one McCallister got loose and lost several car lenghts to McKinney.  McCallister got the lead back down to a couple car lengths through turns 3 and 4 but wouldn’t have enough to mount a charge as McKinney came across the checkers to claim his third feature win in a row and remain perfect on the season!  McCallister finished second with Rob Morrison third, Mark Cazard fourth, and Rick Keaton fifth.

Dale Garrett jumped to the lead to start the night’s 20 lap Geer Brother’s Body Shop INEX Legends Car Semi-Pro feature while Aaron Auffant and Will Hass engaged in an intense battle for second.  Hass made the pass on Auffant on lap six and set his sights on Garrett.  A caution flew on lap 10 for an Aiden Coons spin, setting up Garrett and Hass side by side on the double file restart.  On the restart, Garrett continued with the lead while Hass jumped behind Garrett in second.  Hass put heavy pressure on Garrett in a great battle for the lead, trying to get underneath Garrett and also trying the high side.  On lap 17, while trying to chase Garrett, Hass spun on his own resulting in a caution and Hass having to go to the tail.

On the restart, Garrett continued to lead while Hass quickly made his way through the field, now battling for the fifth spot with Adam Jeffrey with only two laps to go.  As Hass and Jeffrey went into turn one, Hass gave Jeffrey a shot to the bumper, causing Jeffrey to get loose.  Hass tried to shoot underneath of Jeffrey as he was a little sideways off of turn two.  When Hass went beside Jeffrey the two made contact as Jeffrey was still trying to correct the car where it was loose.  The two cars became hooked together and both went head on into the turn two guardrail in what was one of the most violent wrecks in recent memory at Ona.  Thankfully, both drivers walked away sore and shaken, but uninured  When the race resumed, Garrett held on for the remaining two laps to come across the checkers and claim his first career win!  Auffant finished in second with Mick Sansom third, Cole Sowards fourth, and Jeremy Dosier fifth.

A full field invert made for a fun 30 lap McCam Builders Modiifed feature.  Wes Smith and Jeremy Cooper battled side by side for the lead at the start with Cooper using the high side to clear Smith and lead lap one.  Cooper began to pull away while Smith, Jason Garrett, Josh Artis, and Andy Booten went to war for positions 2-5.  Those four drivers would spend the next 20 laps of the race battling bumper to bumper, looking both high and low battling it out.  All the while, Cooper pulled away up front to a lead that was over 9 seconds.  On lap 20, the first caution flag waved for Garrett who had a flat right front tire.  Garrett would go to the hot pit and change a tire and continue back on.

On the restart, Cooper continued with the lead while Josh Artis was able to get by Smith and move into the second position.  Smith and Booten then waged war for the third position as both drivers were loose trying to hang onto their cars and race each other.  On lap 22, Booten dived to the inside of Smith into turn one and made contact with him, resulting in Smith spinning.  Booten was charged with the caution and went to the tail while Smith got his spot back.  On the restart, Artis stayed right with Cooper for a couple laps but as the laps wore on, Cooper started to pull away and would come across the checkers to claim his second feature win in a row!  Artis finished second with Booten charging back to finish third, Garrett fourth, and Smith fifth.

Tommy Rowe took the lead to start the night’s 30 lap Bumper Pounding Street Stock feature with Brett Carey quickly moving into the second position.  Carey pressured Rowe heavily the first four laps and on lap 5, Rowe slipped a little high in turn one, allowing Carey to get to his inside and take the race lead.  Rowe tucked back into second while Carey pulled away by a few car lengths.  Within the next few laps, Rowe caught back up to Carey with third place runner Chris Jividen catching up to the top two.  Carey, Rowe, and Jividen battled nose to tail in an intense battle for the lead all the way up until lap 14 when the caution flew for a Lexy Lambert spin.  On the restart, Carey continued with the lead while Jividen passed Rowe to move into second and set his sights on Carey.

Jividen quickly caught Carey as the two battled bumper to bumper for the lead.  Jividen was pushing hard, trying to find a way to get around Carey.  With four laps to go, Jividen’s car got away from him as he hit the turn four guardrail.  Jividen was able to continue on and maintain the second position but that allowed Carey to stretch his lead.  Carey would lead the rest of the way and come to the checkers to claim his first win of the season!  Jividen finished second with Rowe third, Chris Wheeler fourth, and Clinton Thompson fifth.

The final race of the night saw another full field invert in the Southern Ohio Speed INEX Legends Car Semi-Pro division.  Jay Dunlap and Marty Powers led the field to the green while Tyler Martin quickly zoomed through the field and passed both Dunlap and Powers to take the lead on lap one.  On lap two, another scary accident occurred as Dunlap and Jake Keaton got together on the backstretch.  The contact sent Keaton’s car airborne into the backstretch guardrail in a hard accident.  Thankfully both Keaton and Dunlap were ok but unfortunately both cars would be done for the race.  On the restart, Martin continued to lead while fast qualifier Steve Swann made his way from last to now the second position on lap three.

Martin and Swann then engaged in an intense, race long battle for the lead.  Martin stayed glued to the bottom while Swann tried every way to get a run on him, looking both high and low as the two stayed bumper to bumper.  Coming to the white flag, the two were bumper to bumper to lead as going into turn one the two made contact with both cars spinning into the guardrail.  Swann was charged with the caution but would have to much damage to continue on.  Despite losing his rear bumper and a lot of bumper damage, Martin was able to continue on and would keep his position in the lead for the green-white-checkered restart.  On the restart, Martin pulled away and would come across the checkers to claim his first career win!  Matthew Martin finished second with Marty Powers third, Scott Martin fourth, and Swann fifth.
