ONA, WV-Despite a weather forecast that called for rain on raceday for nearly the entire week, the weather was absolutely perfect for State Electric Supply Night at the Ona Speedway on Saturday, August 3rd. Race fans were once again treated to another night of exciting racing action.
The night started with the 25 lap All Seasons Powersports Late Model feature. Jacob Bell took the lead from the pole with Gregg Carby quickly moving into the second position and battling Bell for the lead. The two battled nose to tail lap after lap with Carby looking high and low trying to pass Bell. The two would remain nose to tail coming to the Dutch Miller Automotive competition caution flag with Bell still on front. On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart, Carby would use high side momentum to clear Bell and take the lead coming off of turn two. One out front, Carby pulled away but an intense battle occurred for the second position for the remainder of the race. Carby would go on to lead the remaining laps and take his first win of the season! Burcham would finally make the pass on Bell on lap 22 and come home second with Bell in third.
Jeremy Cooper and Danny Vickers battled nose to tail for much of the nights 15 lap LG Pressure Washing Modified feature. Cooper would hold off Vickers to lead every lap and claim his fourth Modified feature win in a row!
Jamie Womack and JR Adkins battled nose to tail for several laps in the nights 25 lap Brody Nash Century 21 Crown Vic feature. Following the Dutch Miller Automotive competition caution on lap 13, the race stayed even tighter between the two. Adkins gave it a good effort to get past Womack, but wouldn’t have enough as Womack came to the checkered flag to claim his fourth feature win in a row! Adkins finished second with Shane McLane third, Shane Morris fourth, and Karsyn Maxey fifth.
Jay Workman took the lead from the outside pole to start the night’s 30 lap Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR feature with Nick Fowler running in the second position. Workman would lead the first 15 laps as the Dutch Miller Automotive competition caution flew on lap 15. On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart, drama would ensue as second place runner Fowler, the man Workman is chasing in the battle for the championship, slowed and pulled off the track, relegating him to an 11th place finish. Workman would capitalize on Fowler’s misfortune and lead the remaining laps to come to the checkered flag and claim his fourth feature win of the season! Tim Cassidy finished second with Chris Deskins third, Jake Burgroff fourth, and Keith Watson fifth.
The Haunted Majestic Street Stocks thrilled once again in another incredible 30 lap feature. Tommy Rowe led the opening three laps until a Dutch Miller Automotive caution flew on lap 3 as Marty Power’s went into the turn one guardrail. Powers would go to the hot pit and repair the car and continue on. On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart, Jason Skeens would choose the high lane and battle side by side with Rowe for the lead! The two battled side by side for the next three laps until another Dutch Miller Automotive caution flew on lap 6 for debris on the track. The Tri-State Stoneworks restart would again see Rowe and Skeens go at it with Skeens using the high side after several laps of side by side racing to take the lead!
With Skeens now up front, the battle was for the second position between Rowe and Kenny Chapman. Chapman would move past Rowe on lap 12 and set his sight on Skeens. Within a few laps, Chapman was right on Skeens bumper as they battled nose to tail for the lead! Not able to find a way around Skeens down low, Chapman would use the high side and battle side by side for the lead with Skeens! On lap 19 Chapman would clear Skeens with a high side pass. Chapman seemed destined for victory until the Dutch Miller Automotive caution flew on lap 28 as Powers once again hit the turn one guardrail. On the Tri-State Stoneworks restart, Rowe would have a few peaks under Chapman but wouldn’t have enough to make the pass as Chapman led the remaining two laps to claim his third win on the season! Rowe finished second with Mike Christy third, Powers fourth, and Skeens fifth.
The Garrett brothers put on a show in the nights 20 lap Tri-State Stoneworks INEX Legends Car feature. Dale Garrett would take the lead at the start with Jason Garrett tucking behind him in second. Jason would try for the entire race to find a way around Dale in what was a thrilling battle. As the race reached it’s final laps, Jason would even give the bumper to Dale on several occasions. The younger Garrett would hold a smooth wheel the entire race though and lead every lap as Dale Garrett claimed his second feature win in a row! Jason Garrett finished second with Adam Jeffrey third, Kenny McComas fourth, and Nate Dunlap fifth.
The final race of the night was a 10 lap Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR Dash that would see drivers who hadn’t won a race this season compete in a 10 lap battle. Jake Burgroff took the lead from the start and held off Ona Speedway veterans Chris Deskins and Keith Watson in a quick 10 lap dash that saw the top three cars on top of each other for nearly the entire race! For Burgroff the race was his first ever win at Ona Speedway.
The Ona Speedway will be off on Saturday, August 10th but will return to action on Saturday, August 17th for Nitro Construction Services Night! The night will feature a full racing program with all classes plus have lots of family fun with the Ona Volunteer Fire Department Back to School Bash. There will be a dunk tank setup with several Ona Speedway drivers and track officials in the dunk tank from 5:30-7:00 pm. Fans can pay $5 for three balls to throw at the tank to try to dunk their favorite (or least favorite) driver or track official. All dunk tank proceeds will go to the Ona Volunteer Fire Department. The fire department will also be giving out t-shirts to the first 50 students and will have fire trucks on display.
