Ona, WV-It was a perfect night for racing at the Ona Speedway on Saturday, June 4th for the annual Throwback Night. 62 cars from three different states entered to do battle in front of another strong crowd in attendance.
The night would start with the 20 lap Geer Brother’s Body Shop INEX Legends Car Semi-Pro feature. Will Geer took the lead at the start and began pulling away from the field and never looked back to lead all 20 laps to claim his second career feature win and first of the season! Will Hass and Dale Garrett had a great battle for most of the race for second with Hass getting second and Garrett third. May 21st winner Aaron Auffant finished fourth while Adam Jeffrey scored another strong finish in fifth.
Tyler Brown stormed to the lead to start the night’s 20 lap Greg Chandler Frame & Body Sport Mod feature with Rick Watson behind him in second. Watson stayed within 2-3 car lengths of Brown for much of the first part of the race but as the laps wore on, Brown was able to extend his lead and come across the checkers to take his second feature win in a row! One of the best battles of the season occured for third as J. R. Adkins and Justin Shanteau battled side by side for the position for multiple laps. The two battled door to door in an intense, clean battle for position with Adkins eventually using the high side to get the third position while Shanteau finished fourth and Brad Cooper in fifth.
It was a frantic start to the race in the Keaton’s Collision Center Late Model feature as Kenny Parsons stormed to the lead while Jacob Bell and Bobby Fihe battled side by side for second and Jake Keaton and Gregg Carby battled side by side for fourth. Bell would eventually clear Fihe and set his sights on Parsons while Keaton and Carby both passed Fihe who was hung on the outside. On lap 3, Bell would look to the high side of Parsons, allowing Keaton to get to Bell’s inside. Keaton would make the pass and now set his sights on Parsons. On lap 5, Keaton found the opening he needed and looked to the inside of Parsons to take the race lead. Keaton would pull away up front while Parson’s got passed by both Bell and Carby. Keaton led the remaining laps to take his second feature win in a row with Bell second, Carby third, Parsons fourth, and Fihe in fifth.
Perhaps the most exciting race of the night came in the SNAP Lawn & Handyman Crazy Compact feature. Evan Proctor took the lead at the start while Kassidee Bush quickly moved into second and began pressuring Proctor for the lead. While Proctor and Bush battled for the lead, Stacie Watson quickly moved her way through the field and up to third. Watson would catch the lead duo of Proctor and Bush to make it a three car battle for the win. Lap after lap the top three battled with Bush desperately trying to find a way around Proctor. In a race that came down to the final lap, Proctor would hold off Bush by 0.367 tenths of a second to take his first win of the season! Bush finished second with Watson third, James Saylor fourth, and Rex Burton fifth.
Steve Swann and Jake Keaton battled for the lead at the start of the Southern Ohio Speed INEX Legends Car Pro feature with Swann taking the lead and Keaton in second. On a lap 6 caution period for a Zach Steele and Scott Martin accident, Keaton pulled into the hot pit with a issue, relinquishing his second place run and having to start on the tail on the restart. When the race restarted, Swann would lead with Tyler Martin now in second. Martin would chase Swann for the remainder of the race and stay close to him, but would never be able to make the pass as Swann came to the checkers to claim his second feature win in a row! Tyler Martin finished second with Keaton charging back up to third, Matthew Martin fourth, and Steve Hass fifth.
Joe Workman put on one of the most dominating performances in recent memory in the night’s 25 lap Contempo Trophy & Award UCAR feature. Workman started on pole and never looked back, leading all 25 laps to win by 9.640 seconds. Tim Cassidy and Joe Workman had an intense battle for the second spot for much of the race with Cassidy getting second and Jay Workman third. Nick Fowler finished fourth, holding off fifth place finisher Chris Deskins in another great battle.
Jeremy Cooper led to start the night’s 25 lap McCam Builders Modified feature with Andy Booten and Jason Garrett involved in a tight battle for second. Booten and Garrett battled for second for much of the race while Cooper pulled away up front. With 10 laps to go, Booten and Garrett made heavy contact with both cars half spinning to the infield and Garrett pulling into the pits out of the race with damage. Cooper would never look back as he led every lap to claim his first win of the season! Booten finished second with Tyler Brown third, Wes Smith fourth, and Justin Shanteau fifth.
