Saturday will see the beginning of a lot of exciting changes that happened over the offseason for the speedway. It will give fans a first look at the speedway after a large grandstand renovation project that took place over the off-season. The Family Fun Zone will be open for the first time with cornhole and tic-tac-toe games for attendees to enjoy. It will also see the first of many fan promotions as the first 100 kids in attendance will receive a free Ona Speedway Kids Crew Badge.
On track, Saturday will see a historic first race in speedway history. For the first time ever, the cars made famous on YouTube by Cleetus McFarland, the Brody Nash Century 21 Crown Vics, will take to Ona for a race. The division is a new weekly division at the speedway and will offer fans an exciting, edge of your seat style of racing.
The new season brings a lot of anxious anticipation for the race teams. Winning the first race of the season is always a big deal. Not only does a win get you the early season points lead, it’s a reward for an off season full of work tuning on their race cars. For race teams, running well Saturday is even more crucial as it is the only tune-up the teams get before the biggest race of the season on Saturday, April 27th with the Mountaineer 100.
The start of the season also brings many new names in new places. Legendary Ona Speedway drivers Danny Vickers and Paul Wireman are both set to return to action after many years out of the drivers seat. Vickers will be in the LG Pressure Washing Modifieds while Wireman, who has recently became a TikTok star at the age of 83, will be in the Haunted Majestic Street Stocks. The elimination of the Crazy Compact division has also resulted in a major boost for the Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR division as former Crazy Compact drivers Bradly Workman, Preston Hysell, Evan Strickland, and Andy Ennis have all moved to the division.
Pit gates will open Saturday at 1:00 pm with general admission gates opening at 5:00 pm and racing starting at 6:30 pm.
