ONA, WV-Spring is here in Cabell County, WV and with springtime comes the start of racing season at Ona Speedway. After a long offseason, the roar of engines will be heard in Ona, WV as the speedway opens for the annual preseason Test N’ Tune on Saturday, April 13th. The Test N’ Tune will feature open practice from noon until 6:00 pm. Pit gates will open at 11:00 am.
The preseason Test N’ Tune is crucial for race teams as it gives them an opportunity to test setups on their cars before the season gets underway on Saturday, April 20th with the Delegate Daniel Linville Cabin Fever Bash. This years preseason Test N’ Tune is even more crucial for a couple of reasons. First, it is the only preseason Test N’ Tune. Historically, the speedway hosts a couple of preseason Test N’ Tune’s but with multiple Ona teams going to Bristol Motor Speedway for the US Short Track Nationals on April 6th, there was only room on the schedule for one preseason Test N’ Tune. Second, when the season get’s started on April 20th, it will be the first of three consecutive weeks of racing, including the biggest race of the season, the Mountaineer 100 on April 27th. All teams will want to be able to come out of the gate strong with the season schedule heavier at the start of the year.
The preseason Test N’ Tune will also serve as an opportunity for crucial track time for what has been an influx of new drivers and drivers in new classes. The elimination of the Crazy Compact division after last season has saw the majority of drivers in that class switching to the UCAR division with new cars. The Three-Sixteen Motorsports Legends Car division will see new drivers enter the class in Ethan Johnson and Scott Brotherton. The LG Pressure Washing Modified division will see the return of Danny Vickers while the Haunted Majestic Street Stock division will see the return of Paul Wireman. The largest area of unknown will be the Brody Nash Century 21 Crown Vics that will take to the track for the first time this season.
In another change for the preseason Test N’ Tune, the session will no longer be broken down into time slots per class. The track will be hot from noon until 6:00 pm with the speedway sending two cars in the same class on track for 8 lap runs in the order they come to the pit gate. This will give teams the opportunity to make as many runs as they can fit in during the six hour long practice session.
New track tech director Dalton Parsons will also be at the speedway to tech any cars that want to be teched before the start of the season. All teams are encouraged to run their car through tech that way any discrepancies can be seen and fixed before it would result in a disqualification at a race. Fuel and tires will also be for sale at the track. For drivers in the All Seasons Powersports Late Models, LG Pressure Washing Modifieds, and Haunted Majestic Street Stocks, you will be able to purchase your first 5 tires for the start of the season and get those scanned into your tire bank for the first race as part of the speedways new tire limit rule.
All access pit passes for the Test N’ Tune are only $10 while the cost for a race car and driver is $25. Fans are encouraged to come out and spend a fun day at the track where they can hangout in the pit area and meet the drivers and get close to the cars at a heavily discounted pit pass price.
