ONA, WV-Following another incredible night of racing that saw 60 entries from six different states on May 24th, the Ona Speedway is back in action for another special event this Saturday, May 31st with Putnam County Bank Night and the Putnam County Bank Throwback Classic. This race was originally scheduled for May 3rd but weather postponed the event to May 31st.
The LG Pressure Washing Modifieds will headline the night with the 40 lap, $1,000 to win Putnam County Bank Throwback Classic. The Modified division has had two great races to start the season with Jeremy Cooper claiming victory in both races. Cooper, the defending track champion, also won the last Modified special at the track back last October in the Air Systems 40 in memory of Wes Smith. Drivers such as Andy Booten, Jamie Womack, and several others will all be aiming at Cooper in their attempt to take the big $1,000 win on Saturday.
The All Season’s Powersports Late Models have came out with their strongest start to the season in recent memory at Ona. The division has averaged 11 cars in the first two races and will look for another big night this Saturday, May 31st. The battle atop the point standings is as close as it can be as the two feature winners this season, Jake Keaton and Matthew Parsons, are currently tied for the points lead. The Late Models aren’t the only division tied in points, the Brody Nash Century 21 Crown Vics also have a tie atop the point standings between last week’s feature winner Dusty Harding and Karsyn Maxey.
Tommy Rowe and Devon Vincent have set themselves up for an early season battle for the track championship in the Eco First Street Stocks. Rowe and Vincent are the two feature winners this season with Rowe’s bonus point for a fast time on May 10th and his heat race win on May 24th giving him the narrow two point advantage over Vincent. This class is always competitive and puts on a great show with several great drivers also chasing Rowe and Vincent.
Jay Workman has started where he left off in 2024 in the Contempo Trophy & Awards UCAR division. The defending track champion scored both feature wins in the division last Saturday. The UCAR division once again had the highest car count of any division last Saturday and looks to thrill the crowd again for another 30 lap feature on Saturday. All drivers will no doubt have their goal set to beat the fast PT Cruiser of Workman and get to victory lane, while Workman will look to keep his perfect season alive.
The Three Sixteen Motorsports INEX Legends Cars saw Nate Dunlap score a big win. Dunlap, a Semi-Pro winner last season, scored his first career win with the class as one division. The win was enough to propel Dunlap into the current points lead. A career best finish by Ethan Johnson in second was another huge storyline that came out of last week while his older brother Elijah Johnson moved to second in the point standings after a strong third place finish. The Garrett brothers of Jason and Dale that have put a stranglehold at the top of the division the past year, had to miss last week’s race due to a prior commitment and will be looking to make up ground in the standings on Saturday.
They say it only takes two cars to make a race. We saw this to the fullest extent last Saturday in the new Crazy Compact division. Andy Ennis and Frank Slone put on an incredible show for the races entire 15 laps. The two cars battled side by side for the lead for the majority of the race with Ennis barely holding off Slone to claim his first career feature win. These two drivers showed just how fun this division can be and set a strong precedent for growth as the season goes on.
The Keaton’s Collision Center Juice Box division has stole the show the past two races with great entertainment as the youth of Ona Speedway have raced Radio Flyer Go Karts on a shortened track on the frontstretch. Last race saw two new winners come out of the division with Myla Williamson and Conor Deskins taking the wins. They join Cooper Brown and Ryder Keaton as the feature winners this year. While the track does score the race to determine a winner, every kid walks away a winner in the for fun races. Last week, all kids received $10 Dairy Queen gift cards and a voucher for a FREE Kids Meal from McDonald’s of St. Albans.
Those are the storylines heading into another great night of racing coming up this Saturday. All divisions mentioned above will be in action. Pit gates will open Saturday at 1:00 pm with general admission gates opening at 5:00 pm and racing starting at 6:30 pm. General admission is only $15 for ages 13 and up and FREE for ages 12 and under. All access pit passes are $35 for ages 13 and up and FREE for ages 12 and under.
