September 12th: Mountaineer 100 Night Two

Doug Meyer wins the Mountaineer 100

ONA, WV-Cars from seven different states came to Ona Speedway to do battle on Saturday, September 12th for the Yes Chevrolet & Yes Ford Mountaineer 100 presented by Geer Brothers Body Shop. All drivers came with one goal in mind, to become a winner on the biggest race night of the season.

The night started with the CRS Super Truck Series Mountain Climber 50. Polesitter Brian Taylor and Brad Copen battled side by side for the lead at the start of the race with Taylor taking the lead on lap one. Fast qualifier Brandon Huff stormed through the field and was battling for the third spot with Brian Brewer when the two made contact on lap 8. Brewer was charged with the caution and Huff got his spot back.

On the restart, Huff moved into second and quickly set his sights on race leader Taylor. The two battled side by side for the lead for a couple of laps with Huff making the high side pass on lap 13 to take the race lead. With Huff up front, a wild incident occurred on lap 34 as Brewer and Bailey Delfosse made contact on the frontstretch. Brewers Truck went up in the air and narrowly avoided the inside guardrail. Both Trucks continued on. When the race restarted, it was all Brandon Huff as he took the win to sweep the CRS Truck events at Ona Speedway in 2020! Brad Copen finished second with Brian Brewer third, Bailey Delfosse fourth, and Brian Taylor fifth.

The next race up was the richest and most prestigious race of the season at Ona Speedway, the Mountaineer 100 for the ground pounding Modifieds. 18 of the best Modified drivers in the states of West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan took to the historic speedway for the race. The race would be ran in two segments with a halfway break at lap 50 for fuel and adjustments.

Norm Taylor and Doug Meyer led the field to start the Mountaineer 100. The two battled side by side for the opening lap with Meyer leading lap one and taking control of the race. With Meyer up front, the battle for second on back was intense as all cars were nose to tail! The race ran green until lap 11 when the first caution flew for a Chris Smith spin. On the restart, Meyer appeared to spin his tires a little, allowing Taylor to get around him and clear him for the lead. Meyer got right back on Taylors bumper as the two battled for the lead for several laps with Meyer making the pass to regain the lead on lap 17.

With Meyer up front, the racing for second on back stayed intense with Taylor desperately trying to hold on to second. On lap 23, defending Mountaineer 100 winner Brian Nester nearly hit the guardrail after contact while racing in the top 5, bringing out a caution. Nester’s crew went to work and quickly was able to fix the car during their two courtesy laps. When the race restarted, Nester quickly moved through the field and made his way back to the top five.

In the battle for second, after several laps of battling, Brad Yelton was able to get around Taylor on lap 35 and move into the second position while Meyer continued to lead. As the caution flew on lap 50 for the 10 minute halfway break, it was Meyer the race leader with Yelton in second, and Nester charging from the tail to third.

On the restart, Meyer continued with the lead with Yelton, Nester, and Greg Fullerton right on his tail! The four drivers separated themselves from the field and with less than a second and a half between Meyer and fourth place runner Fullerton for several laps. Meanwhile, on through the pack Jamie Womack charged from the tail to move into the fifth position. Around lap 70, the leaders entered into lap traffic, allowing Meyer to start to put some separation between himself and Yelton. On lap 78, the first caution of the second segment flew for debris with a large piece off of one of the cars bodies on the track.

The caution allowed the field to bunch right back up to Meyer. On the restart, Meyer was able to continue the lead and started to pull away some from Yelton by lap 85. On lap 89, the races final caution fell when early race leader Norm Taylor spun. This set up another crucial restart. On the restart, Meyer was able to hold off a challenge from Yelton on the opening lap back to green and lead the final 11 laps to win the Mountaineer 100! Yelton finished second with Nester third, Fullerton fourth, and Womack in fifth. Steve Hass was the Dynamic Shock Service hard charger advancing six positions.

The next special event race up was the Keaton’s Collision Center 50 Late Model special. Polesitter Jerick Johnson jumped to the lead with Logan Runyon right on his tail. Johnson and Runyon battled nose to tail for the lead for the first eight laps until a caution flew for a spin by Kenny Parsons. On the restart, Johnson continued to lead and actually stretched his lead out to two seconds over Runyon until a caution flew on lap 30. On the restart, Johnson’s car did not fire as he pulled into the pits with a broken rear end in a heartbreaker for Johnson.

This allowed Runyon to inherit the lead. When the race restarted, Runyon began to pull away up front with Terry Smith in second and Brad Coons third. A great battle for second occurred between Smith and Coons with Coons finding a lot of speed up top in the late stages of the race. Coons began to reel in Smith as the two battled side by side for second. The two battled side by side for several laps with Coons able to make the high side pass and move into second with two laps to go.

On the white flag lap, Runyon was in command and poised to take the checkers until a caution flew, setting up a one lap shootout. On the restart, Runyon was able to hold off Coons and win the biggest Late Model race of the season at Ona! Coons finished second with Smith third, Jake Keaton fourth, and Bobby Fihe in fifth in a photo finish for the position with his brother Joe Fihe.

The nights 25 lap Legends Car special saw some wild opening laps with Cameron Gue and Scott Martin battling for the lead at the start. Gue led lap number one in a side by side battle at the line with Martin taking the lead on lap 2. Sixth place starter Steve Swann immediately moved into second and on lap three was right on Martin’s bumper. Swann put his #32 machine up high as Swann and Martin battled side by side for the lead! The two were still side by side for the lead on lap 4 with the two making contact as Swann spun around and several cars piled together. All drivers were ok. Swann was charged with the caution but was able to continue from the tail.

On the restart, Martin continued to lead but was under constant pressure from Gue and Wade Reed as it was a three car battle for the lead! With eyes on the intense battle for the lead, Swann continued to work his way through the field to now make it a four car battle for the lead. Swann made his way by Reed, then by Gue for second, and by lap 19 was battling with Martin for the lead! Swann made the pass on Martin to take the lead on lap 20 and never looked back, taking his third win in a row! Gue finished second with Reed third, Scott Martin fourth, and Tyler Martin fifth.

The final race of the night was the 40 lap Contempo Trophy & Award U Car special. Danny Keyser jumped to the early race lead with Eric Johnson in second. Keyser and Johnson battled nose to tail for the lead for several laps with Johnson making the pass for the lead on lap 9. As Johnson made his way to the lead, Jay Workman was able to work under Keyser as well to move into the second position. Johnson and Workman then battled nose to tail for the lead for several laps as eighth place starter Keith Watson made his way through the field.

By lap 25, Watson made his way all the way up to fourth and joined Johnson and Workman to make it a three car race for the win! Watson was able to work his way past Workman for second after several laps of hard racing and set his sights on Johnson. Watson looked high on Johnson as the two battled side by side for the lead until the caution flag flew on lap 32, setting up an 8 lap dash for the win.

On the restart, Johnson and Watson once again battled side by side for the lead! The two battled side by side for several laps with Watson taking the lead on lap 35! Watson led the remaining five laps to take his third win of the season with Johnson in second, Workman in third, Chris Wheeler fourth, and Reuben Fetty fifth.
