September 11th: Mountaineer 100 Night One

Sibila, Webb, Hass, Bush win Night One of Mountaineer 100

ONA, WV-Race fans were treated to another great show at the Ona Speedway on Friday, September 11th for night one of the Yes Chevrolet & Yes Ford Mountaineer 100 presented by Geer Brothers Body Shop. The night featured four special races ahead of Saturday’s big show. Several of the Modified and Late Model teams that will be competing Saturday were in attendance during the Friday afternoon practice.

The night got underway with the 40 lap Classic Car feature. Corey Steinbrecker jumped to the early race lead with Brad Cooper in second, Steve Hass third, and Jeff Taylor fourth. Cooper would put extensive pressure on Steinbrecker during the first 10 laps of the race. Steinbrecker’s car would jump a little loose in the corners, allowing Cooper to stick a nose underneath of him. The two had a great battle for the lead, with Cooper making the pass for the lead on lap 11 but a caution would fly before the lap got completed, putting Steinbrecker back to the lead.

On the restart, Steinbrecker and Cooper battled side by side for the lead as through turns 3 and 4 Cooper got loose and spun. When the race resumed, Steve Hass jumped to the lead and would hold off several strong challenges from Cooper, who came back up through the field to challenge for the lead later in the race, and Jeff Taylor to take his first win of the season in the biggest race of the season! Taylor finished second with Cooper third, Cam McKinney fourth, and Steinbrecker fifth.

Stacie Watson jumped to the early race lead in the 25 lap Crazy Compact feature. Evan Proctor quickly moved into the second position and set his sights on Watson. Watson and Proctor had a thrilling battle for the lead with Proctor trying both high and low to try to get around Watson. On lap 10, Proctor found his opening and went under Watson off of turn 2. Proctor got a nose ahead of Watson and the two made contact with Proctor spinning. Watson was charged with the caution and Proctor had to pull off the track due to damage from the accident.

That left Donna Bush as the new race leader on the restart with Jimmy McElfresh now second. On the restart, Samantha Watson got loose in turns one and two and shot up the track in front of the field, collecting Kassidee Bush. Both cars would be unable to continue but both drivers were ok. On the restart Bush and McElfresh had a great battle for the lead with Bush able to hold on. Stacie Watson stormed through the field from the tail and was in second place when a caution flew on lap 21.

On the restart, Watson jumped to the inside of Bush before crossing the start finish line and the two made heavy contact going into turn one with Bush spinning. Watson was charged with the caution and Bush got her spot back. On the restart, Bush led while Watson, coming from the tail for the second time jumped up high and began passing cars. Watson moved her way into second with two laps to get and set her sights on Bush.

Coming across the white flag lap, Bush held a half second lead on Watson. Down the backstretch and into turn three Watson drove in extremely hard and by the middle of the turn was right on Bush’s bumper as the two made contact with Bush spinning. Watson was charged with her third caution of the night and was done for the race. Bush retained her spot back and on the restart led the remaining lap to take her first win of the season! Chris Prater finished second with Tyler Bailey third, James Saylor fourth, and Jimmy McElfresh in fifth.

Rick Sibila dominated the nights 25 lap Sport Mod feature, taking the win by 9.080 seconds in what was the most dominating win in any class this season. Chad Bailey and Chris Smith had a great race long battle for second with Bailey finishing second and Smith third. Justin Shanteau and Marty Lamm also had a great race long battle in their race for the fourth position, with Shanteau finishing fourth and Lamm fifth.

The final race of the night was the 40 lap Hobby Stock special. Defending track champion Kenny Chapman jumped to the early race lead with Brett Carey moving into second, J. R. Webb third, and Clinton Thompson fourth. The top four cars were all bunched up on each other with a four car battle for the lead! On lap 5, Brett Carey looked to the inside of Chapman to attempt to take the lead and the two made contact with Chapman spinning. Carey was charged with the caution and Chapman got his spot back.

On the restart, Chapman, Webb, and Thompson had an incredible three car battle for the lead while Carey sliced his way through the pack from the tail. On lap 16, Webb looked to the inside of Chapman going into turn three and took the race lead with Carey following him through to take second. Webb and Carey would have an intense, crowd thrilling battle for the lead the entire remainder of the race. The two were literally nose to tail almost every corner with both drivers sideways off the corners fighting loose cars.

With two laps to go, Carey drove really hard into turn one and the car jumped sideways on him, causing him to loose several car lengths on Webb. Webb, the Modified veteran, would hang on the final two laps to take his first Hobby Stock win in his first Hobby Stock race at Ona! Carey finished in second with Chapman third, James Jones fourth, and Ralph Vincent in fifth.
