June 27th: JR’s Frame & Body Firecracker Extravaganza Night Two

Andy Booten wins Firecracker 30 at Ona; Brandon Huff claims CRS Super Truck Win

ONA, WV-The Ona Speedway concluded it’s JR’s Frame & Body Firecracker Weekend on Saturday, June 27th with a stacked racing card that featured 5 classes. The track braved threatening weather conditions all day and 3 rain delays during afternoon practice to get in what was an outstanding night of racing in front of a large crowd.

The night started with the 15 lap Late Model feature. Anthony Thompson and Jacob Bell battled side by side for the lead the entire opening lap and on lap two going into turn one Thompson had brake issues and went into the side of Bell. Thompson and Bell both crashed hard into the turn one guardrail. Thankfully, both drivers were ok. With a car count of 3 Late Models due to the threatening weather, that left Kenny Parsons as the only car left. Parsons would take the Late Model feature win with Jacob Bell second and Anthony Thompson third.

Next to hit the speedway was the Firecracker 30 $1,500 to win Modified special. The race was originally scheduled for 50 laps but was dropped to 30 laps due to threatening weather. Andy Booten and JR Webb led the field to green to start the race as the two battled side by side for the lead on the opening lap. The races first caution flew on lap 2 for Jeremy Cooper who stalled on the backstretch. Cooper would be able to get back going.

When the race resumed, Booten was able to hold off challenges from JR Webb in the races early laps as it set up a great battle for second between Webb and Greg Chandler. The two made contact while battling for the second spot with Webb going around and having to restart the race from the tail. The race restarted with Booten and Chandler having a furious battle for the lead. The two battled side by side for several laps with Chandler settling in the second spot right on Booten’s bumper. The caution would fly again on lap 20 as Mike Gue spun and Chris Jividen had no place to go and was collected in the accident as well.

On the restart, last place starter Steve Hass, who had been steadily charging through the field, moved his way into the second position and set his sights on Booten. On lap 23, Hass got crossed up in turns one and two as that set off a chain reaction that led to Greg Chandler spinning around. Due to it being a racing incident with many cars getting crossed up, race officials made the call to give everyone their spot back.

When the race resumed, the battle for the lead was furious again between Booten and Hass. On lap 24, Hass dove to the inside of Booten for the lead in turn one as the two made contact with Booten spinning around. Hass was charged with the caution and Booten got his spot back. On the restart, Jeremy Cooper quickly moved his way into second but would not have enough to catch Booten as Andy Booten came across the checkered flag to win by a half second over Cooper in second! Greg Chandler finished third with Josh Artis fourth and JR Webb fifth.

The CRS Super Truck Series then took to the track for their Ferrell Concrete & Construction 30 feature event. Just like the Modifieds, the CRS Truck feature was cut down to 30 laps due to threatening weather. Polesitter Bailey Delfosse took the lead at the start with fast qualifier Brandon Huff charging on the high side. Delfosse, Huff, and Brian Taylor had a great battle for the lead during the races opening laps with Huff making the high side pass on lap 5 to take the lead. Huff would go on to lead the remaining laps and take the win with Delfosse in second, Taylor in third, John Kennedy fourth, and Brian Brewer in fifth.

The 25 lap Classic Car feature saw defending track champion Brad Cooper take the lead at the start. With Cooper leading, the best battle on track during the early part of the race was for second between Rob Morrison and Will Hass. The two battled side by side for several laps until a caution flew for a stalled Kenny McCallister. On the restart, Cooper maintained the lead while Morrison spun off of turn four from the third spot to bring out a caution.

When the race resumed, Cooper and Hass had an incredible battle for the lead that went bumper to bumper for several laps. Cooper was able to hold on to a 2 car length lead until a caution flew on lap 24 to set up a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart, Hass stayed right on Coopers bumper as the two came to the white flag. On the last lap, going into turn one, Hass drove in hard and put the bumper to Cooper, getting him loose, allowing Hass to get to his inside as the two raced off of turn two! The two battled side by side down the backstretch and into turn three! Coming off of turn four to the checkers, Hass was able to use the inside groove to make the pass and come to the checkers to win on a last lap pass! Cooper finished second with Danny McGowan charging to finish third, Kenny McCallister fourth, and Shawn Kauffer fifth.

Kenny Fletcher got out to a big lead to start the nights 30 lap Contempo Trophy & Award U Car feature. Fletcher’s lead was up to 3 seconds until a caution flag flew on lap 14. On the restart, something happened to Fletchers car as he slowed and pulled off the track with Keith Watson now taking the race lead. With Watson leading, all eyes were on Michael Hughart as he charged through the field and into second. During the final 8 laps of the race, Hughart began closing in on Watson who had a 1.5 second lead. On the final lap, Hughart cut the lead down to only a couple car lengths and coming off of turn four to the checkers got right up to Watsons bumper! Watson came across the line to win by less than a car length with Hughart second, Reuben Fetty third, David Adkins fourth, and Tim Cassidy fifth.

To close out the night, the crowd was treated to a spectacular fireworks show sponsored by Ferrell Automotive that lasted approximately 15 minutes.

The Ona Speedway will be in action again on Saturday, July 18th with a complete racing program. Racing will start at 7:00 pm. Complete details of the July 18th event will be posted shortly on the Ona Speedway Facebook page and website.
