August 8th: Geer Brothers Body Shop Night

Parsons, Booten, Swaney, Carey, Steinbrecker, Hughart, Swann, Bailey win on August 8th

ONA, WV-Following a rainout on August 1st, the Ona Speedway near Huntington, WV was back in action on Saturday, August 8th for Geer Brothers Body Shop Night. It was a perfect night for racing as 70 cars from 3 different states came to the track to do battle.

The night started with the 30 lap Sport Mod feature. Ohio traveler Braden Swaney jumped to the lead to start while Chris Jividen settled into second with Wesley Ennis in third. The cars to watch early on were J. R. Webb and Marty Powers as they made their way from the back of the pack into the top five. Nobody could touch Swaney up front as he led all 30 laps in a caution free race to take his second feature win of the season! Jividen finished second with J. R. Webb making a late race pass to finish third, Ennis fourth, and Powers in fifth.

Corey Steinbrecker jumped to the lead in the night’s 25 lap Classic Car feature as Ethan Ramey and Rob Morrison battled for the second spot. Morrison moved into second and set his sights on Steinbrecker as the battles raged from third on back. Steinbrecker, driving the legendary Keaton Motorsports owned #14, led every lap in a caution free race to take his first win of the season with Morrison in second, Jeff Taylor third, Cam McKinney fourth, and Brad Cooper in fifth.

Kenny Parsons took the lead to start the night’s 15 lap Late Model feature. Parsons maintained about a half second lead for most of the race. During the final few laps, Ohio driver Joe Fihe was running down Parsons and coming to the white flag was only a car length behind! On the final turn, Fihe was right on the bumper of Parsons as the two drag raced to the checkers with Parsons taking his second win of the season, Fihe in second, and defending track champion Greg Sigler in third.

Thomas Bailey, looking to remain undefeated on the season, took the lead to start the night’s 20 lap Crazy Compact feature with Dustin Higginbotham in second. As the race reached it’s final laps, the battle for second heated up as 13 year old Preston Hysell battled with Higginbotham for second. Hysell made the pass while 19 year old Evan Proctor, in his very first race, followed Hysell through into the third spot. Bailey would come to the checkered flag to remain undefeated on the season with Hysell in second, Proctor third, Dustin Higginbotham fourth, and Donna Bush in fifth.

Mike Christy and Kenny Chapman battled side by side to start the night’s 25 lap Hobby Stock feature. Christy took the lead with a great battle going on for second between Chapman and Chris Jividen as both cars were sideways through the turns at times! Jividen was able to make the pass to move into second on lap 8. On lap 9, seventh place starter Brett Carey moved into the third position and set his sights on Jividen. The two battled for position until Carey made the pass for second on lap 13.

On lap 16, the races first caution fell for Clinton Thompson who spun, setting up for a double file restart that had Christy and Carey on the front row. On the restart, the two battled side by side for the lead with Carey able to make the pass on the high side to complete lap 17. The following lap, the red flag flew as a major fire erupted on last week’s winner Jason Salmons. Track safety crews quickly extinguished the blaze and Salmons was ok.

On the restart, Carey continued with the lead while Christy and Chapman had a great battle for the second spot. Christy was able to hold on to second and set his sights on Carey in the races closing laps. As the leaders came to the white flag, Christy had caught up to Carey and was right on his bumper! When they went into turn three, Christy put a bump to Carey as they were nose to tail battling for the win through turns 3 and 4! Carey would hang on to take his second win of the season with Christy in second, Chapman third, James Jones fourth, and Chris Jividen fifth.

Michael Hughart led to open the night’s 30 lap Contempo Trophy & Award U Car feature. On lap 2, a big wreck occurred as second place runner David Adkins got sideways in front of the field. Marcus Esch and Jared Cassidy were collected in the accident. All drivers were ok. On the restart, Hughart continued to lead with tenth place starter Joe Workman immediately making his way into the second position to battle with Hughart.

Hughart and Workman battled nose to tail, bumper to bumper during the races early stages with Tim Cassidy third, Keith Watson fourth, and Dusty Harding fifth. At some points in the race you could of threw a blanket over the top 5 as they stayed bunched together. On lap 15, after several laps of nose to tail racing, Workman made the pass on Hughart to take the lead. Keith Watson was able to move by Hughart to run second and set his sights on Workman. Watson was able to get to the bumper of Workman as the two battled bumper to bumper for the lead!

With four laps to go, Watson got his run on Workman and went to the inside of him going into turn one. Both cars drifted high battling side by side for the lead as it allowed third place runner Hughart to pass both of them and regain the lead! The following lap, Workman’s car erupted into flames to bring out a red flag. Thankfully safety crews once again put the fire out fast and Workman was ok. On the restart, Hughart held off a hard charging Kenny Fletcher in a final corner drag race to the finish line to take his first win of the season! Fletcher finished second with Watson third, Dusty Harding fourth, and Evan Adkins fifth.

The nights 30 lap Modified feature saw Andy Booten pass Scott Pierson to take the lead on the opening lap with Josh Artis moving into second. Artis closed on Booten in the races early laps as the two battled bumper to bumper for the lead. As the laps wore on, Booten began to stretch out his lead as Jeremy Cooper caught Artis. The two battled for second with Cooper making the pass and setting his sights on Booten. By lap 20, Cooper was right on the tail of Booten as the two battled bumper to bumper for the lead! Cooper desperately tried to get around Booten, but Booten was able to extend his lead in the final laps to take his second win of the season! Cooper finished second with Artis third, J. R. Webb fourth, and Greg Chandler fifth. J. R. Webb was the Dynamic Shock Service hard charger.

The final race of the night was the 20 lap Legends Car feature. Brad Bowen and Chad Woodrum had an intense, side by side battle for the lead for the races first three laps with Woodrum taking the lead on lap four. Steve Swann, in his return to racing, quickly moved into second from his eighth place starting position on lap six and set his sights on Woodrum. On a lap 8 restart, Swann used high side momentum to pass Woodrum and take the lead. Swann would lead the remaining laps to take his first win of the season with Cameron Gue in second, Chad Woodrum third, Scott Martin fourth, and Wylie Jeffrey fifth.
